A snowshoer was found dead along a hiking trail in Rome, Maine on Thursday evening, according the Maine Warden Service.

The snowshoer was reportedly a 57-year-old man from Mount Vernon. Officials have yet to release his name.

The man was last seen in a parking area on Thursday at roughly 1 p.m. From there, he left to snowshoe up a trail that leads to the summit of Round Top Mountain. His body was found around 9 p.m. by members of the Rome fire department, who were searching for him along with game wardens.

Officials said it appears his death was caused by exposure. A medical examiner’s office is expected to officially determine the cause of death.
