Several groups of mountain bikers in Vermont are working to create the East Coast’s first hut-supported mountain bike route.

According to an article on REI.com, six chapters of the Vermont Mountain Bike Association are joining forces to plan the Velomont Trail. The proposed trail would be 130 miles long, running through the Green Mountains from Killington north to Stowe over state, federal and private land.

Plans for the route include 40 miles of existing trails, 10 miles of road connections and 80 miles of singletrack to be built over the next 10 years. When completed, the trail will be 70 percent singletrack.

Additionally, the Vermont Huts Association, a nonprofit working to develop a statewide network of backcountry shelters, plans to build a dozen shelters along the Velomont Trail.
