A massive fire has scorched New York’s Shawangunk Ridge, and firefighters are continuing to battle the blaze, which is still raging in its fourth day.

According to an article on RecordOnline.com, the fire is believed to have been started by a homeowner burning debris outdoors on Sunday, despite a current state ban on burning. Since then, the fire has burned roughly 2,400 acres in Ulster and Sullivan counties.

Roughly four square miles of state forest land has been burned by the wildfire. Because of the difficult terrain, firefighters are taking to the air to fight the fire. An air tanker from Canada has been flown in, along with National Guard Blackhawk helicopters. This marks the first time an air tanker has been used in New York State. An air tanker can reportedly scoop, carry and drop 800 gallons of water while flying.
