A Maine paddler is likely the first woman solo kayaker to complete the epic 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail self-propelled, according to an article on PressHerald.com.

The trail winds through New York, Vermont, Quebec, New Hampshire and Maine, following waterways first used by Native Americans.

Laurie Chandler, 53, of Bremen, Maine, completed the journey in 53 days. In doing so, she becomes the first solo female kayaker to do it without the use of a shuttle service. Instead, she carried her canoe on her own over 67 portages across 127 miles.
