Anyone active in the outdoors should be careful of ice this time of year. But officials are warning outdoors enthusiasts to be especially careful in the Adirondack High Peaks after several recent incidents.
In their weekly Outdoor Bulletin on Thursday, January 23, officials with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation cautioned that unsafe ice is present on some surface waterbodies across the High Peaks Wilderness.
They said anyone crossing any frozen body of water should use extra caution, especially on or near areas of moving water.
Recent weeks have seen a number of incidents involving hikers who have broken through surface ice into deep water.
As of Wednesday, snow depths were 26 inches at the stake at the Lake Colden Interior Cabin, which sits at an elevation of roughly 2,750 feet.
