An 11-year-old was among a group of three hikers who were rescued shortly after 3:30 a.m. yesterday after getting lost on New York’s Eternal Flame Trail.
According to the Erie County Sheriff’s Office, deputies received a call at 3:30 a.m. from a 19-year-old man saying his hiking group had been lost on the trail for roughly four hours and his phone battery was at 2 percent.
His phone reportedly died during the call, but deputies were able to use rapid SOS software to locate where the call came from.
Deputies were able to located the hiking group, which also included a 28-year-old woman, and help them back to the trailhead without injury.
The Eternal Flame Trail leads to Eternal Flame Falls, a small waterfall located in Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park, New York. A small grotto at the waterfall’s base emits natural gas, which can be lit to produce a small flame. This flame is visible nearly year round.
