After facing vocal opposition, the Appalachian Mountain club has withdrawn plans to build a new 50-guest hut in New Hampshire’s Crawford Notch State Park, according to an article on NewHampshire.com.

In the summer of 2015, the AMC said the existing hut system was near capacity, with use having tripled since the construction of its most recent hut, Mizpah Spring, in 1965.

The proposed hikers’ hut would have been located in a section of Crawford Notch less than two miles into the woods, making it easy for people who don’t normally get into the mountains to experience it.

But critics said the area is already overrun by wealthy out-of-staters who are trampling on a fragile part of the world and undermining the outdoor experience.
