A man died and his wife was rescued after being lost for four days in the Maine woods last week.
According to a report on Boston.com, Pamela Helmstadter, 72, of Alexander, Maine was rescued by Maine game wardens in the woods about a mile from her home in Alexander, Maine.
Officials with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife said Helmstadter and her husband, John, 82, went for a hike on a network of trails behind their house on Sunday, October 13. They were joined by their two dogs.
John Helmstadter reportedly fell and couldn’t get up again after the couple had wandered off a trail. Pamela Helmstadter went to get help, but became lost. Neither had a cell phone on them.
Rescuers began searching for the couple Wednesday night after a concerned neighbor alerted authorities.
Pamela was reportedly “severely hypothermic” when rescuers found her on Thursday. Her husband’s body was discovered about 200 yards away.
