The Hills-to-Sea Trail – a new 47-mile trail connecting central and midcoast Maine – will officially open to the public on National Trails Day, the first Saturday in June.
The footpath winds from Unity to Belfast, Maine, and it is extraordinary for the fact trail advocates received approval from 60 landowners to allow the trail to cross their property. According to an article on PressHerald.com, all those deals were “handshake” deals; none of them included easements or land purchases – just simple agreements to let people use the land as long as they follow guidelines. In all, more than 30 miles of the trail crosses privately-owned land.
The Hills-to-Sea Trail also crosses more than 7,000 acres of conservation land.
