An 86-acre parcel of land that includes the slope of a 1,500-foot peak was recently conserved in southern New Hampshire.
According to officials with the Monadnock Conservancy, the land trust recently accepted the donation of 86 acres in Fitzwilliam, New Hampshire—just south of Monadnock State Park.
The land includes the slope of The Pinnacle, which stands at roughly 1,500 feet and is Fitzwilliam’s second-highest peak. The Pinnacle was part of the Fitzwilliam Ski Area, which operated from the 1940s into the 1970s.
Officials said landowner Peter Smith of Newton Massachusetts donated the conservation easement covering the land his family has owned since the 1940s and covered the costs of finalizing the easement.
The land is in a strategically important area, said members of the Monadnock Conservancy. They sit near other conserved and undeveloped land, including the 2,700 Rhododendron State Park, other land under easement with the Conservancy, and land owned by the Town of Fitzwilliam.
