A Massachusetts woman is dead after falling roughly 50 to 75 feet off a cliff at Purgatory Chasm on Wednesday.
According to a statement from the Sutton Police Department in Sutton, Massachusetts, the victim was a 49-year-old woman from Topsfield, Massachusetts, who was hiking with three of her four children and other family members at the time.
Sutton police received a 911 call at 1:47 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23 reporting that a person had fallen 50 to 75 feet at Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Sutton.
There were reportedly multiple medial professionals in the area hiking the chasm at the same time, and were able to provide medical attention right away. However, the woman had succumbed to the injuries sustained during the fall, and was pronounced deceased a short time later.
Police said the incident is currently an active investigation but does appear to be accidental.
