Today is the last day of the season for climbing Katahdin.
Baxter State Park officials will close all of the park’s Katahdin and Traveler Ridge trails for the season as of Tuesday, October 13.
Officials close the trails between the summer and winter seasons to protect the area’s alpine ecosystems and trails.
However, winter camping in the park is just around the corner.
Baxter State Park’s winter season begins December 1 and runs through March 31.
Applications for winter hiking and camping in Baxter can be submitted beginning this week on October 15.
Those applications will be processed after the park’s winter lottery on November 2.
