First Public Ski Glades Planned For Rangeley, Maine

Good news for backcountry skiing in western Maine as the Rangeley Lakes Region is getting its first public ski glades this coming winter.

The High Peaks Alliance, a conservation group that works to enhance and ensure outdoor recreation opportunities in Maine’s High Peaks region, recently announced that they have finalized plans for the region’s first public ski glades at Bald Mountain in Oquossoc, Maine.

High Peaks Alliance staff member Matt Kusper recently met with representatives from the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands and Granite Backcountry Alliance to formalize a route for the western glade, identify improvements to an existing T-bar line, and establish the official skin track for uphill travel.

The alliance has a volunteer work weekend planned for September 19 and 20 to cut and prepare the glades for the upcoming season. How much work gets done that weekend will depend on how many volunteers take part.

Kusper said planning for region’s new public ski glades has been ongoing for nearly two years.
