Maine Ski Area Close To Being Sold To Locals

A Maine ski area whose future has recently been clouded with uncertainty is on the brink of being purchased by a group of locals.

Hermon Mountain Ski Area in Hermon, Maine—just outside of Bangor—recently announced in a Facebook post that a group of buyers with strong local ties have stepped forward and are currently under contract to purchase the mountain.

The development comes after an earlier deal fell through and threatened the ski area with closure following the season.

In October, following the collapse of that deal, officials with Hermon Mountain said in a social media post that the coming season would be its last as a ski area.

“… it is with much thought and heavy hearts that we are announcing that this will be our last year owning/running the ski area,” stated the post. “It has been for sale for quite some time. We are still hopeful that someone will be able to purchase it and keep it a ski area before the end of this coming season but if not we will be closing it down and looking for alternatives to selling it, i.e. house lots or something like that.”

In the recent post announcing the new potential sale, Hermon Mountain officials expressed optimism that this one would stick.

“The sale hasn’t closed yet, but momentum is strong and the outlook is encouraging,” stated the December 16 post. “Most importantly, this group is committed to keeping Hermon Mountain a ski area and honoring its long-standing role in the community.”

The potential new owners reportedly want to grow Hermon Mountain into a year-round destination with weddings and special events, flexible event and gathering spaces, expanded outdoor recreation, and additional seasonal activities.
