Massachusetts Awards $7.6 Million For Trail Projects

Massachusetts is awarding more than $7.6 million in grants to fund trail projects in 38 communities across the state.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey today announced the grants will be awarded through the MassTrails grant program to support the creation, expansion and maintenance of public trails throughout Massachusetts.

“Each Massachusetts community is home to at least one public trail that gets residents outside and brings in visitors that help support small businesses,” said Healey. “These grants will help improve and expand access to trails across our state so more people can enjoy the outdoors, stay active and explore new places.”

This year’s grant program funds trail projects in 38 municipalities, as well as statewide efforts to improve trail networks.

The program funds the efforts of municipalities, public entities, non-profit organizations, and Native communities. Trails receiving funding are used for a variety of activities, including hiking, running, biking, skiing, horseback riding, and off-road vehicle use.

This year’s grant recipients are working on projects in the following municipalities: Belchertown, Berlin, Billerica, Boxford, Clinton, Dover, Dudley, Easthampton, Everett, Falmouth, Framingham, Gardner, Georgetown, Hardwick, Holliston, Lynn, Malden, New Bedford, New Braintree, Newbury, Northampton, Northborough, Quincy, Revere, Sandwich, Saugus, Shrewsbury, Southampton, Sturbridge, Swampscott, Topsfield, Webster, Westborough, West Springfield, Westfield, Westport, and Winchendon.

Officials said a complete list of all projects, as well as the total funding awarded to each, will soon be available on the MassTrails website
