2 Hikers Rescued In Western Massachusetts

Rescue crews endured cold, rainy weather and navigated rocky, steep terrain at night to rescue two stranded hikers in western Massachusetts on Saturday.

According to officials with the Westfield, Massachusetts Fire Department, they received a report of two hikers in need of help at 7:20 p.m. on Saturday, January 10. The hikers were reportedly in an area between Reservoir Road in Westfield and Pitcher Street in Montgomery.

Massachusetts State Police were able to make contact with the hikers, but were unable to pinpoint their location due to the dense canopy and signal interference.

One of the hikers had the What3Words app installed on their phone, and by using the app rescuers were able to get their coordinates.

Rescuers said the response was impacted by cold, rainy conditions and darkness.

Searchers reached the hikers at 8:51 p.m. and were able to have them out of the woods by 9:15 p.m.
