A hiker who suffered a “significant” leg injury was rescued near the summit of Mount Washington yesterday.
According to New Hampshire Fish and Game officials, they received a 911 call about an injured hiker on Mount Washington at 1:20 p.m. on Saturday, July 25.
The hiker was reportedly on the Tuckerman Ravine Trail near the Tuckerman Junction, roughy half a mile from the summit. The 18-year-old hiker had reportedly suffered a significant leg injury and could no longer continue.
A group of four hikers, including some with EMT certifications, were passing by, assessed the hiker’s injury, and provided medical support while a rescue crew was assembled.
Conservation officers and members of Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue and Lakes Region Search and Rescue responded to this incident.
Rescue personnel were transported up the Mount Washington Auto Road to the summit and hiked down the half mile to the injured hiker. He was placed in a litter and carried back up to the summit by the rescue personnel and the four Good Samaritan hikers who stayed to help.
At 5:50 p.m., the rescue crew made it to the summit where the hiker was placed in a Fish and Game cruiser and taken down the Auto Road, where he was then transferred to the Gorham Ambulance and taken to Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin for treatment of his injury.
