Rescuers in New Hampshire carried an injured hiker more than three miles to safety Wednesday night.
According to New Hampshire Fish and Game officials, conservation officers were notified of a hiker who had fallen and suffered an injury preventing them from walking at 4:10 p.m. on Wednesday, August 5.
The hiker had reportedly been descending the Twinway Trail about 1.5 miles above the Zealand Falls Hut when the incident occurred. The hiker, a 73-year-old woman from New Jersey, was one the second day of a three-day hiking trip when the injury occurred.
Her hiking partner left and hiked down to the Zealand Falls Hut to get help. A staff member from the hut hiked up, located the injured party, and was able to assess her condition and confirm a carryout would be required.
A call was made to the Pemigewasset Valley Search and Rescue Team, who responded along with conservation officers and hiked 3.5 miles up the trail to the injured hiker.
The rescuers reached the injured hiker at 7:46 p.m. Officials said the hikers were well prepared and had all the required equipment.
The injured hiker was placed in a rescue litter at 8:08 p.m. and rescuers began carrying her down to the trailhead.
Rescuers arrived at the trailhead at 10:25 p.m. The hiker was then taken by the Twin Mountain Ambulance to Littleton Regional Hospital for further medical treatment of her injuries.
