Two hikers had to be rescued in separate incidents on New Hampshire’s Moat Mountain Trail this week.
New Hampshire Fish and Game officials received a report of a lost hiker on the Moat Mountain Trail in Bartlett, New Hampshire at 8:10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7.
The hiker, a 17-year-old from Conway, New Hampshire, had reportedly started hiking at around 3:30 p.m. to climb the Moat Mountain Trail. According to AllTrails.com, the hike is more than eight miles out and back and takes roughly six hours to complete.
At around 8 p.m., the hiker contacted his father saying he was lost and his phone battery was almost dead.
The call dropped and several attempts to contact him by phone were unsuccessful.
The hiker’s car was located at the Passaconaway Road trailhead. Conservation officers began searching for him, and he was located on July 8 at 4:15 a.m. in the vicinity of Middle Moat Mountain.
The hiker was helped back to the trailhead parking area, arriving at 6:24 a.m.
The following day, on Wednesday, July 8, at 1:40 p.m., New Hampshire Fish and Game responded to another hiker on the Moat Mountain Trail.
The hiker, an 18-year-old female from Providence, Rhode Island, reported that she fell on the trail and injured her right knee. She was unable to bear weight and as a result called 911 for help.
The hiker was a little more than two miles from the trailhead parking area.
Conservation officers responded, along with members of the Lakes Region Search and Rescue Team and Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue Team.
When crews reached the hiker, she was assessed and stabilized, and then carried by responders back down to the parking area.
