Maine police are asking for the public’s help after a paddleboarder who went missing was found murdered last week.
According to Maine State Police officials, Sunshine Stewart, 48, of Tenants Harbor, Maine, went paddleboarding near 100 Acre Island on Crawford Pond in Union, Maine, on the evening of Wednesday, July 2.
Maine Game Wardens received a call at 1:05 a.m. on Thursday, July 3 to help local police and fire personnel search for a missing paddleboarder.
The body of an adult female was discovered, and wardens requested help from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit Central because of the circumstances surrounding the discovery.
An autopsy performed by the Maine Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta on July 3 determined the manner of death was homicide.
The cause of death is not being released at this time.
Police said it is an active and ongoing investigation.
Police are asking anyone who may have seen Stewart paddleboarding between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2 to contact Maine State Police at 207-624-7076 or text MESPTIP to 847411.
Police are also asking the public to remain aware of their surroundings and report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement.
