Rock Climber Dies From Fall In Connecticut

A Massachusetts rock climber died last week after suffering a fall while climbing near the Appalachian Trail in Connecticut.

According to officials with the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), they received a report of a fall victim on the afternoon of Thursday, September 10. Environmental conservation police along with Connecticut State Police responded to the scene along the Appalachian Trail on River Road in Kent, Connecticut.

The climber had reportedly been climbing in the area known as St. John’s Ledges when he fell.

According to the Ragged Mountain Foundation, St. John’s Ledges are a series of slabs and short cliffs found east of Caleb’s Peak and above the west bank of the Housatonic River. The Appalachian Trail runs along the base of the Upper Ledges. While much of the rock is considered good for beginner and intermediate climbers, parts of the slabs get to roughly 100 feet high.

The victim was identified as Collin Salmon, 30, of Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

Salmon was taken to New Milford Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
