Taft Lodge On The Long Trail To Close Through End Of October

The oldest and largest overnight site on Vermont‘s Long Trail will be closed for roughly a month and a half beginning Tuesday, September 8.

The Green Mountain Club‘s Taft Lodge on Mount Mansfield will be closed while it undergoes repairs. Club officials said the closure is expected to last through the end of October.

Taft Lodge is the oldest, largest, and second-highest overnight site on the 272-mile Long Trail.

Crews will be replacing rotting sill logs on the 105-year-old structure.

Tenting or hammocking is not permitted outside the lodge or anywhere above 2,500 feet, which includes much of the Mount Mansfield area.

Club officials said hikers should plan to stay at other sites, such as Butler Lodge (3.5 miles to the south), Twin Brooks Tenting Area (4.7 miles south), or Sterling Pond Shelter (5.9 miles north).

All overnight sites on the Long Trail are first-come, first-served and may fill to capacity during the busy fall hiking season.
