Two People Reportedly Rescued On Katahdin

Two people who were stuck in bad weather on Katahdin overnight were reportedly rescued this morning.

Emergency service officials in Houlton, Maine confirmed to Northeast Explorer that a rescue did take place on Katahdin this morning. Officials said they would provide more information on the rescue shortly.

The confirmation follows a flurry of activity on the Baxter State Park Facebook group overnight that began with a member posting that his two friends had been climbing on Katahdin and were stuck on a rock face in a storm.

The person said they had episodic communication with the climbers on a satellite phone, and one of the climbers was in poor condition with hypothermia.

Around 9 p.m., a Maine Air National Guard helicopter tried to rescue the climbers, but was forced to turn around.

The helicopter crew reportedly returned this morning and was able to rescue the climbers.

Brandon Chase, a hiker who was on the mountain at the time, was able to capture video of the helicopter rescue. (See below.)

No other information about the rescue or the condition of the climbers was immediately available.

We’ll update this article as more information becomes available.
