Mountain bike racing success usually comes down to speed, endurance, and technical ability. But riders at a Vermont race this weekend have another way to gain an edge on the competition: eating donuts.
Stratton Mountain Resort in Vermont will host its second annual Tour de Glaze event this Saturday, July 18.
The Tour De Glaze is one of the Northeast’s most unique mountain biking events. Riders in this timed cross-country race can literally eat their way to a faster finish, with five minutes deducted from their total race time for every donut they consume during the event.
Each lap, riders will climb the uphill Ground Control Trail, a 1-mile-long trail with 650 feet of elevation gain, and then descend the flowy Trail Forest 1 Green Trail.
Each lap totals about 2.5 miles.
Organizers will set up the donut station next to the MSS building to hand out the donuts and track the number eaten. Participants can’t start riding until the entire donut has been consumed.
The event begins at 7:30 a.m. Participants can race in one of four categories: Beginner (1 lap), Sport (2 laps), Expert (3 laps), and E-Bike (3 laps).
