2 Unprepared Hikers Rescued In Adirondacks

Two young hikers who had run out of food and water and did not have headlamps had to be rescued overnight in the Adirondacks last week.

According to officials with the New York Department of Environmental Conservation, forest rangers received a report of two hikers who called to report they were lost on Giant Mountain in the Adirondack High Peaks at 9:22 p.m. on Tuesday, May 26.

Giant Mountain stands 4,627 feet high and is the 12th tallest peak in New York.

The 19- and 21-year-olds were reportedly out of food and water, didn’t have extra layers of clothing or headlamps, and their cell phone batteries were running low.

A ranger spoke to the hikers on the phone and directed them to a lean-to the pair remembered seeing. The ranger instructed them to do whatever they could to stay warm until rangers arrived.

Just after 12 a.m., two rangers reached the subjects, provided warming layers and food, and hiked them back to the rangers’ trucks.

Rangers provided a courtesy ride to the subjects’ vehicle at Roaring Brook Falls. Resources were clear at 3 a.m.
