A section of the Tuckerman Ravine Trail is currently closed to all use due to dangerous conditions.
In a social media post yesterday, the Mount Washington Avalanche Center said the section of the Tuckerman Ravine Trail through the Lip Area is closed because of the magnitude of the crevasses and undermining, along with the severe consequences of a fall in that area.
The section extends from Lunch Rocks at the bottom of the ravine to the top of the Headwall where it meets the Alpine Garden Trail. Only this section of the trail is closed.
Officials said the recent warm up and heavy rainfall has signficantly undermined the snowpack. Deep holes, hidden voids, and collapsing snowbridges all currently exist in or around the trail.
“A fall here would be serious and potentially unsurvivable,” MWAC officials said in the statement.
Additionally, more than half of the Sherburne Ski Trail has melted out and is also closed below the yellow rope.
