Volunteers are building a new trail for both hikers and skiers that leads up to a scenic mountain pond near Moosehead Lake in Maine.
Recently, Friends of the Mountain, a nonprofit that runs Big Moose Mountain Ski Area in Greenville, Maine, began clearing a 1.4-mile trail from the base of the ski area up to Mirror Pond, a secluded alpine pond with beautiful views of the area.
Members of the nonprofit said they intend to have the route be a year-round trail for hiking and touring.
The pond, which is at an elevation of 2,415 feet, was previously difficult to access. Volunteers began clearing the trail through rugged backcountry terrain in mid-May.
