New York officials are warning hikers and climbers to avoid the Trap Dike on Mount Colden in the Adirondacks because of “extremely hazardous” conditions.
New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) officials issued the warning today in the DEC’s weekly Adirondack Outdoor Bulletin.
Officials said the Trap Dike on Mount Colden in the High Peaks Wilderness is extremely hazardous right now because of thing layers of ice.

They advised outdoors enthusiasts to avoid the area during the current shoulder season between summer and winter conditions. They said the thin ice on Trap Dike makes it too slippery for hikers to navigate safely. They also said the ice hasn’t frozen enough yet for winter climbing, making it an “extremely dangerous” time of year to attempt it.
The Trap Dike is one of the most famous—and dangerous—climbs in the East, even when conditions are good.
