Rescuers Treated To Fireworks After Steep Rescue In Vermont

Rescuers got to take in a fireworks display from the top of Mount Mansfield in Vermont after they carried an injured hiker up steep, dangerous terrain on Saturday.

According to a Stowe Mountain Rescue Facebook post, they responded to a call on Mount Mansfield on Saturday afternoon, July 5 for a hiker with an injured ankle.

The hiker had reportedly injured his ankle high on the Halfway House Trail. While trying to make it down, the injured hiker encountered a former mountain rescue member from New Hampshire, who thought the injury was serious enough that the hiker should call for help.

The rescuer from New Hampshire stayed with the injured hiker and assisted responders with the rescue.

Members of Stowe Mountain Rescue responded to the scene along with a new Swedish Med-Tech vaccum mattress that is lightweight and provides a comfortable, fitted, and secure surface for injured hikers. It was their first use of the new mattress.

The extraction involved the rescuers hauling the litter up 200 vertical feet on a steep, narrow, rocky trail. They got the injured hiker up to the ridge just as nighttime fell.

As rescuers and the hiker began to drive down the Toll Road, they got to see a fireworks display at Spruce Peak and took the time to stop the trucks and watch the fireworks before heading down.
