Maine State Police have arrested a 17-year-old male in connection with the murder of a paddleboarder on July 3.
According to a statement by the Maine State Police, they arrested the 17-year-old from Maine at 10:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16 in connection with the homicide investigation in Union, Maine.
Officials said the juvenile was taken into custody without incident in Union. He was taken to the Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland.
According to police, the victim, Sunshine Stewart, 48, of Tenants Harbor, Maine, went paddleboarding near 100 Acre Island on Crawford Pond in Union, Maine, on the evening of Wednesday, July 2.
Maine Game Wardens received a call at 1:05 a.m. on Thursday, July 3 to help local police and fire personnel search for a missing paddleboarder. Stewart’s body was found soon after.
State police said the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta confirmed the victim’s cause of death was strangulation and blunt force trauma.
Police said the case remains and an active and ongoing investigation.
