A hiker who officials said did not have a light source had to be rescued at night by forest rangers in the Catskills last week.
According to New York Department of Environmental Conservation officials, forest rangers received a call for a lost hiker who was off trail on Windham High Peak in Windham, New York at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 11.
Two forest rangers hiked in from opposite sides of the mountain. They arrived at the Elm Ridge lean-to 10 minutes apart, shortly before 9 p.m.
One of the rangers made voice contact with the 32-year-old hiker from New Jersey.
At 9:20 p.m., one of the rangers reached the subject in good health, but without a light source.
The ranger provided a headlamp and hiked the subject out of the woods. At 9:40 p.m., they reached the Peck Road Trailhead.
Rangers suggest bringing a headlamp or flashlight, and extra batteries, even if you’re not planning to hike into the night.
