This one might be an oldie, but it’s a goodie.
About 15 years ago, whitewater kayaker Steve Fisher was on top of the paddling world. He wasn’t just one of the world’s great whitewater kayakers, he was also one of the industry’s best filmmakers.
His films weren’t just whitewater highlights. They were epic adventures where exploration and the journey were an equal part of the story.
His films often took place in exotic locales, like Africa’s Zambezi and Congo Rivers.
But in 2014, Fisher and his team brought that same sense of exploration and adventure to our own home waters of the Northeast. With their kayaks on their backs, they ventured into upstate New York to tackle the remote headwaters of the Hudson River and the state’s steepest mile of whitewater.
Only accessible by hiking through beautiful Avalanche Pass in the Adirondacks, the Opalescent Gorge holds one of the steepest runnable sections of whitewater in New York, including 65-foot-high Hanging Spear Falls.
