When it comes to outdoor excitement, it’s hard to beat the rush of whitewater rafting. The speed and chaos of riding a rapid, the spray of water, the threat of taking a swim, and the stories with friends afterwards, it checks all the adventure boxes—excitement, companionship, and just the right level of risk.
Thanks to roaring spring snowmelt and controlled dam-release weekends, the Northeast delivers some of the most exciting and accessible whitewater rafting in the eastern United States. The region’s rivers offer reliable release schedules, deep wilderness settings, and professional outfitters that specialize in unforgettable guided adventures.
Whether you’re a rookie rafter, a family looking for a safe thrill, or an adrenaline junkie chasing big rapids, these commercial rafting outfitters in the Northeast offer professionally-guided trips for every experience level.

MAINE
Maine is undoubtedly the capital of New England whitewater rafting, with large dam releases, massive rapids, and the option to tackle whitewater on an epic multi-day wilderness adventure. Several of Maine’s top whitewater outfitters aren’t just outfitters, but are full-blown adventure resorts complete with lodging, restaurants, and other guided adventure opportunities.
New England Outdoor Center is a lakeside resort in the Katahdin region that offers whitewater trips on the Penobscot River. Their many options range from relaxing Class I floats all the way up to high-intensity Class V adventures. They also have cabins and camping for lodging, activities such as hiking, biking, and wildlife tours, snowmobiling in the winter, and they are home to Knife Edge Brewing.
Northern Outdoors is another premier Maine adventure resort with many whitewater options, including trips on the Penobscot, Kennebec, and Dead Rivers. They also offer cabins and camping at multiple locations, plus other outdoors experiences, and they are home to the Kennebec River Brewery.
North Country Rivers, Northeast Whitewater, and Three Rivers Whitewater are three other whitewater outfitters who also offer lodging, dining, and other activities.

NEW HAMPSHIRE
New Hampshire has a whitewater scene that is ideal for families. It’s centered in the town of Errol along the Androscoggin River, where Class II rapids provide a fun, splashy ride. North Woods Rafting guides trips along the river, as does Northern Waters Outfitters, which also offers camping. Saco Bound also guides whitewater trips from Errol, although they are based in Conway where they offer kayaking and tubing trips along the Saco River.

VERMONT
Thanks to Vermont’s topography, the state’s creeks become a hotbed for whitewater kayaking in the spring, with lots of narrow rapids and dramatic falls. But most of its rivers don’t lend themselves to whitewater rafting. With one notable exception: the West River. Both Crab Apple Whitewater Rafting and Zoar Outdoor offer trips along the river from their locations near Stratton Mountain. Rafters can expect to tackle exciting Class III and IV rapids, and September trips offer the added bonus of spectacular fall foliage viewing.
MASSACHUSETTS
The Deerfield River is the epicenter of whitewater rafting in Massachusetts (and all of southern New England). Both Zoar Outdoor and Crab Apple Whitewater Rafting run trips along the Deerfield from the small, scenic town of Charlemont in western Massachusetts. Trips range from fun Class II experiences to exciting Class IV rapids. Zoar also offers rafting trips along the Concord River in Lowell in early spring.
NEW YORK
From family-friendly Class II and III rapids to powerful Class IV and sometimes even Class V rapids, upstate New York has a dynamic whitewater scene. The hub of that scene is the Hudson River Gorge. Several outfitters run trips on the Hudson, including Adirondack River Outfitters, Square Eddy Expeditions, Beaver Brook Outfitters, and Whitewater Challengers.
Outside of the Hudson River, Adirondack River Outfitters and Whitewater Challengers also run trips on the Black River, which blasts through the Black River Gorge and can feature Class IV rapids. Adirondack River Outfitters also runs trips on the Moose River, which can feature extreme Class V rapids in April and is recommended for experienced whitewater rafters.

PENNSYLVANIA
The Poconos in the northeast corner of Pennsylvania are home to fun whitewater rafting trips as the Lehigh River squeezes through the Lehigh River Gorge. The river is great for family trips, with Class II and III rapids. Outfitters offering trips in the area include Whitewater Challengers, Pocono Whitewater, and Whitewater Rafting Adventures.
In the southwestern part of the state, Ohiopyle Trading Post offers whitewater rafting trips on three sections of the Youghiogheny River—often referred to as “the Yough.” The Middle Yough features rather tame rapids and is perfect for families. The Lower Yough is home to challenging Class III and IV rapids, while the Upper Yough has Class V rapids that are just right for adrenaline junkies.
