A hiker who was injured after falling roughly 20 feet on Katahdin’s Knife Edge was rescued by a helicopter crew on Sunday.
According to Maine Forest Rangers officials, Baxter State Park officials requested a Maine Forest Ranger helicopter rescue crew on the morning of Sunday, June 28 for an injured hiker who had been hiking on the Knife Edge on Katahdin.
The hiker had reportedly fallen roughly 20 feet near Pamola Peak, sustaining several injuries, including a serious open fracture of the lower leg.
Baxter State Park rangers reached the hiker and stabilized their injuries for transport.
After multiple attempts due to cloud cover and stormy weather, the hiker was successfully hauled into the helicopter.
The hiker was flown off the mountain and taken to a waiting ambulance from the Millinocket Fire Department.
It was the second helicopter rescue on Katahdin in four days. On Thursday, June 25, two climbers who had been stuck in a severe storm on Katahdin overnight and became hypothermic and dehydrated were rescued by helicopter.
