A woman was injured from an apparent shark bite while swimming off a Martha’s Vineyard beach on Monday afternoon.
According to Edgartown Town Administrator James Hagerty, emergency personnel responded to Norton Point in Edgartown, Massachusetts at around 1:40 p.m. for a report of a swimmer who had sustained an injury to her lower leg while swimming off South Beach.
Hagerty said the swimmer, a woman in her late 20s, had sustained wounds that were consistent with a shark bite.
Edgartown emergency personnel provided medical care at the scene. The woman was then taken to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment.
Hagerty said her injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening and did not involve the loss of a limb or other life-threatening trauma.
Swimming at South Beach was suspended for several hours after the incident as a precaution.
