Lost, Unprepared Hikers Rescued On Mount Monadnock

A pair of hikers with no lights and who were not dressed for cold, snowy weather had to be rescued on Mount Monadnock Sunday night.

According to New Hampshire Fish and Game officials, conservation officers received a report from New Hampshire state police at 4:15 p.m. on Sunday, November 23 of two hikers who were lost at Monadnock State Park.

The hikers had made a cell phone call, to 911 requesting assistance. That call provided GPS coordinates for their location. The hikers were off trail south of the Red Spot Trail, approximately 1000 feet below the summit.

A conservation officer was able to send them a link to mapping software that allowed him to guide the hikers back to the trail. However, officials said the hikers only had lights from their cell phones and were not properly dressed for the snow covered trails and freezing temperature. The hikers had lost the trail due to the recent snowfall and were expecting to be off the mountain before dark.

Due to the amount of time it was taking them to get down the mountain and the fact that their cell phones were dying, a response was initiated by conservation officers.

Two officers located the pair at 6:40 p.m. and provided them with headlamps, hand warmers, mittens, microspikes, and fluids. The hikers were guided back to the park headquarters at 7:25 p.m.
