A bear that has been approaching people and damaging tents has forced the closure of several popular campsites in New York’s St. Regis Canoe Area.
New York Department of Environmental Conservation officials announced the closure of campsites on Long Pond is the St. Regis Canoe Area on Thursday, July 23. Officials said campsites 5 through 11 on the pond are currently closed.
Officials advise that visitors currently avoid the western and north shores of Long Pond.
They said that a bear has recently demonstrated a pattern of approaching people to look for food, damaging tents and food storage containers, and exhibiting minimal fear of humans.
They said the bear is also resistant to deterrents, including bear spray and loud noises.
Officials said that, once learned by bears, these behaviors escalate over time.
DEC officials said they are closely monitoring the bear’s activity and are requesting visitors to report any bear sightings, especially those demonstrating unusual behavior, such as approaching people or entering campsites.

The St. Regis Canoe Area is the largest wilderness canoe area in the northeastern U.S., the 18,400-acre area features more than 50 lakes and ponds offering remote wilderness canoeing and kayaking.
