The new park will be just the second river park built in New England.
Kayakers and surfers will soon have a new river park to enjoy in Maine.
After a three-year process, plans to build a river park in Skowhegan, Maine have finally been approved. The project recently received state and federal environmental permitting, clearing the way for construction to begin.

Plans include a whitewater kayak and surf park (including the Northeast’s first adjustable kayak/surf wave), a riverfront boardwalk, and more than 50 miles of multi-use trails.
The Skowhegan River Park will be just the second river park built in New England, joining the Mill City Park in Frankin, New Hampshire.
Park organizers said they still have fundraising to do to make the park a reality. They said delays in permitting pushed costs up, but they’re actively working with funders and supporters to close the gap. They said they’re optimistic and are planning for construction in 2026.
The park’s project manager will lead a site tour and info session during Skowhegan River Days on Friday, August 8 at 7 p.m. starting behind 155 Water Street. All are welcome to join.
