New York’s Whiteface Resort announced on Monday that its expert terrain known as The Slides has reopened for skiing and snowboarding from the mountain’s summit.
The Slides is a series of steep, narrow chutes that are open only when the Whiteface ski patrol deems them safe.

It is expert-only terrain that is 35 acres of in-bounds, off-piste, double-black-diamond wilderness skiing accessible by hiking from the top of the Summit Quad.
There’s no snowmaking on The Slides, so it requires cooperation from Mother Nature.

Whiteface officials stress the skiing or snowboarding on The Slides requires advanced skills and judgement. In one area, for example, there’s a frozen waterfall beneath all that snow.
A beacon, shovel, probe, helmet, and a buddy are required.
