Ultrarunner Scott Jurek set the Appalachian Trail thru-hike speed record last summer. But he didn’t hold it long.

Early Sunday, another ultrarunning legend, Karl Meltzer, became the new AT record holder, beating Jurek’s record by just 9-and-a-half hours.

According to TrailRunnerMag.com, Meltzer departed Maine’s Mount Katahdin at 5 a.m. August 3 and covered the approximately 2,189-mile trail in 45 days 22 hours 38 minutes. He maintained an average of approximately 46 miles per day and had to cover around 85 miles in the final 24 hours to set the record.
