Maine’s 100 Mile Wilderness is legendary for being one of the most remote and challenging sections of the Appalachian Trail. Now, a new film explores one runner’s bold attempt to set an FKT in this unforgiving wilderness.
The film “The Last Wild Miles” from Singletrack documents the fastest known time (FKT) attempt by thru hiker and ultra runner Finn Melanson.

Melanson is the founder and CEO of Singletrack, a media company that has produced content for the trail running community since 2021.
In the film, Melanson attempts his 100 Mile Wilderness FKT running from Monson to Abol Bridge. He said it isn’t a film just about speed, though. It’s about returning to a trail that shaped him—revisiting the places, people, and rhythms that first pulled him toward ultra running.
Along the way, the film explores the history of the 100 Mile Wilderness, the culture surrounding FKTs on the Appalachian Trail, and the training camps Melanson used to prepare for his effort.
