The popular Avalanche Pass Trail in the Adirondacks that has been closed since July 2025 because of damage from mudslides might reopen this coming winter.
Last summer, heavy rains caused multiple mudslides in the Avalanche Pass area of the Adirondacks. The area affected by the slides has been closed since then.
Impacted routes included the passage south to the Lake Colden area from the Adirondak Loj, and loop routes over Algonquin Peak, Mount Colden, and Mount Marcy back to the Adirondak Loj through Avalanche Pass.
On Monday, officials with the Adirondack Mountain Club posted an update on social media saying that they’ve had several trail crews in the Avalanche Pass area this summer helping crews from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) rebuild the trail.
They said trail crews have done work near Lake Colden, at the junction of the Lake Arnold and Avalanche Pass Trails, and on the Avalanche Pass Trail.
They reported that DEC officials said the trail could be reopen in time for skiing this coming winter.
Until then, though, officials said the trail is closed and the public should stay away from the area. They said hiking in the area creates a danger for both hikers and potential rescue teams.
