With winter conditions set to hit Mount Washington this weekend, officials are warning hikers they won’t have any shelter or services available to them.
New Hampshire State Park officials announced today that Mount Washington State Park is closed for the season beginning Friday, October 16.
The announcement comes as snow, ice, and powerful winds are forecast for this weekend on the summit of Mount Washington.
According to the Mount Washington Observatory’s (MWO) Higher Summits Forecast, temperatures will begin to drop tonight and could bring a wintery mix of snow and ice to the summit tomorrow morning.
By Friday night, temperatures will “drop significantly,” and hurricane-force winds are expected to bring gusts over 100 miles per hour.
Snow accumulations could reach two inches on the summit, and forecasters warn that frigid temperatures will bring an elevated risk of hypothermia and frostbit.
“The higher summits are well into the winter season as we move through October,” said MWO intern Ellie Derry.
