Climber Airlifted After Falling 25 Feet At Cathedral Ledge In New Hampshire

A climber was airlifted to a hospital after falling roughly 25 feet at Cathedral Ledge State Park in Bartlett, New Hampshire Wednesday night.

According to New Hampshire Fish and Game officials, Simon Montgomery, 43, of Greece, was climbing what is known as the Double V route on the Barber Wall on Wednesday, August 13.

At around 7 p.m., he reportedly fell, striking a ledge below the top of the cliff. Montgomery’s climbing partner called 911.

Conservation officers responded to the scene along with crews from Mountain Rescue Service, Bartlett/Jackson Ambulance, Bartlett Police, the U.S. Forest Service, and a SOLO student.

Several rescuers walked out onto the ledge to reach Montgomery and treat his injuries. Meanwhile, other rescuers set up a rope system to lift him to safety.

Crews placed Montgomery in a rescue litter and then hauled him to the top of the cliff. They then carried him to the Cathedral Ledge Road parking area.

They reached the road shortly after 10 p.m. and Montgomery was taken by ambulance to a Central Maine Life Flight helicopter, which reportedly flew him to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

There was no further information on Montgomery’s condition.
