Green Mountain Club Releases New Edition of Long Trail Guide

It is the first new edition of the Vermont hiking guide in eight years and has updated info on nearly 500 miles of trails.

The Green Mountain Club has unveiled a new, updated version of the Long Trail Guide, the most comprehensive reference for hiking in Vermont.

It is the 29th edition of the guide and features new, easier-to-read maps and information charts, updated hike planning resources and stewardship guidelines, and reliable, detailed trail descriptions.

The guidebook, first published in 1917, was last released in 2017. The 2025 edition reflects major shifts in the outdoor recreation world and a boom of backcountry construction, resulting in many new shelters and campsites, as well as improvements to existing ones.

“In an age where hikers have numerous digital resources available at their fingertips, the newly printed edition of the Long Trail Guide provides an easy-to-use, one stop shop for planning a hike on the Long Trail — whether it’s a quick jaunt in the woods or an entire end-to-end trek,” said Chloe Miller, editor of the 29th edition. “Hikers can also be assured that when purchasing a Long Trail Guide, they are supporting the work of the Green Mountain Club to maintain and protect our trails and public lands in Vermont.”

The 272-mile Long Trail extends along the spine of the Green Mountains from the Massachusetts border to Canada, summiting all of Vermont’s 4,000-foot peaks and offering countless memorable excursions for hikers of all ages and backgrounds.

The trail was built between 1910 and 1930, and is the oldest long-distance hiking trail in the United States.

The Long Trail Guide is available for purchase at the Green Mountain Club’s visitor center in Waterbury Center, from local outdoor retailers, and online.

It retails for $19.95 for paperback, $9.95 for an eBook.

The Green Mountain Club will celebrate the release of the Long Trail Guide with an event at the Rothberg-Birdwhistell Visitor Center on May 10 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Guidebook editor Chloe Miller will give a short overview of the book, both historic and current, and a panel of hikers who have completed the Long Trail will discuss the details of how to plan a long-distance hike.

Attendees should register for the event ahead of time.
