Six campers had to be rescued in the Adirondacks last week after a powerful storm damaged their canoes and tents, leaving them stranded on an island.
According to New York Department of Environmental Conservation officials, they received a report a six campers stranded on an island on Lows Lake in Piercefield, New York, at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21.
The campers were reported stranded at the lake’s campsite 27 after a strong storm passed through the area.
Multiple trees had reportedly fallen at their campsite, damaging their canoes and tents. Forest rangers responded to the area had to cut and remove trees that had fallen in the road.
Rangers reached the campers at 8:26 p.m. and reportedly found them “visibly shaken.”
A ranger used a van to drive the campers to St. Regis Canoe Outfitters, who were staged near the upper dam.
Due to the extensive damage at the site, rangers also check several nearby campsites but found no other campers who needed to be evacuated.
Lows Lake has 39 public campsites that are free to use on a first-come, first-served basis.
