Rescue crews in New York had to use a rope system to rescue two canoeists whose boat became lodged against a large rock on Saturday.
According to officials with New York’s Tsatsawassa Fire Company, they received a report of two boaters in distress on Kinderhook Creek at 3:20 p.m. on Saturday, August 1.
When rescue crews arrived on the scene, they reportedly found two adult males clinging to a large rock and their damaged, capsized canoe.
Officials said the paddlers were stuck in “very strong” currents, as the creek was swollen from heavy rain from a recent storm. And officials said initial rescue efforts were hampered by the high water.
Several rescue personnel entered the water in an inflatable rescue boat while other rescue personnel set up a shore-based rope system to rescue the paddlers.
Rescue crews were able to secure both paddlers and get them to shore just before 6 p.m. They were evaluated by local EMS.
