Stowe, Vermont Skimo Race Set For March 1

By Anthony Sims

A revamped Vermont skimo race will have a new name and a new location when it kicks off at the beginning of March.

The Stowe Mountain Heritage Race—formerly known as the Ascend to Victory Skimo Race—will take place at Stowe Mountain Resort in Stowe, Vermont on March 1.

The event is organized by the National Guard Association of Vermont, Sunrise Mountain Guides, and Stowe Mountain Rescue.

Stowe is not only the birthplace of US ski touring, but also the slopes where the legendary Minnie Dole earned his turns before going on to found the National Ski Patrol and 10th Mountain Division.

The race will pay tribute to Stowe’s contributions to the ski industry and military with an 11-mile race over 4,000 feet of Stowe’s most scenic and challenging terrain.

Race organizers said racers should be comfortable skiing groomed black diamond terrain. All ski equipment must be equipped with either brakes or leashes (splitboards exempt).

Organizers said the event will be capped at 100 participants. Entry is $125.
