Don’t be fooled by a lack of snow or ice near a trailhead, because dangerous icy conditions currently exist in many areas at elevation.

Vermont’s Green Mountain Club today posted a warning to hikers saying that the state’s trails “are sporting a serious layer of ice right now.”

The club posted the warning on their social media, with an accompanying photo of conditions on the Long Trail between Battell Shelter and Mount Abraham, along with a warning from hiker James Morris, who took the photo.

“There was NO snow at the trailhead, trail was dry,” said Morris. “After half a mile, ice on trail intermittently. At elevation, all ice.”
