A Maine kayaker died Sunday after his boat capsized on a Down East lake near the Canadian border.

According to the Maine Warden Service, Francis Beaulieu, 62, of Calais, Maine, was paddling on Bearce Lake in the town of Meddybemps late afternoon Sunday when his kayak capsized.

Officials say two kayakers on the lake heard a man yelling for help. They reportedly got to Beaulieu within about five minutes, but found him unresponsive in his life jacket next to his capsized kayak.

The paddlers brought Beaulieu to shore, where local EMS had arrived on the scene. They attempted to revive him, but were unsuccessful.
